City had the laughs from the start. In the first minute, from the kick-off, a ball sent in from the back at once was headed down by Holland. Viktor Lindelof was unable to clear the ball off the line and Gundogan took advantage with a stunning volley to open the scoring. The official time of the goal was 13 seconds.
After Gundogan’s goal, City took a clear lead. City continued to attack. In the fourth minute, from a free-kick, De Bruyne’s header was met by Rodriguez, but it went just wide of the target. In the sixth minute, Grealish’s shot was underpowered. City continued to pound away. 17th minute, Holland shot straight at De Gea. 21st minute, Holland’s shot was wide.
With City unable to add to their tally, the momentum started to shift in United’s favour. Relentlessly attacking the City defence, United eventually levelled the score. In the 33rd minute, Grealish committed a careless handball foul on Aaron Wan Bissaka inside the penalty box.
After checking the video assistant referee (VAR), the referee awarded a penalty kick (PK). Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the spot kick and slotted home the equaliser. The first half ended 1-1.
City took the lead again. In the sixth minute of the second half, Der Bruyne’s free-kick was met by Gundogan at the back post, who volleyed home with his left foot. After City’s goal, the game resumed as it had in the first half, with City dominating possession, but United’s defensive concentration was not easily broken.
Desperate for an equaliser, United brought on Scott McTominay, Alejandro Garnacho and Baudelaires in a bid for a miracle, but it was not to be. City lifted the FA Cup trophy for the first time in four years. After the game, City manager Pep Guardiola broke down in tears of emotion.
Having won the Premier League and the FA Cup, City are now just one step away from the treble. All that remains is the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final against Inter Milan on 11 November. City have always aimed to reach Europe’s top flight since Sheikh Mansour took over, but have fallen short each time. There is no better chance than this time.
